It all started with Baseball

My son has been playing baseball since he was old enough to be eligible to play T-ball; however, learning to sew did not start there. It actually came several years later in 2016. Any baseball mom of an All Star player is quite familiar with “the patch”. Little League requires an official uniform patch to be adhered to the left sleeve of the jersey in a very precise location. If the patch is not adhered to the left sleeve in the specific spot as directed, the player is not permitted to walk on the field.

All Stars is a very quick, busy season. The uniforms came in the day before the first game. The patch had adhesive on the back with instructions to simply iron it on in the specified location. Easy, right? I did not think it could get any easier than that.

Boy, was I wrong!

I dug out my iron, wiped off the dust, and ironed the patch on the shirt as directed. Held up the shirt to proudly admire my work. My heart sank when the patch immediately fell off the shirt. It did not go as planned! Apparently the adhesive was just not going to stick on the synthetic material. By this time it was late in the evening and I did not know a soul that I could call last minute to sew on a patch. Luckily, I had a sewing machine. A sewing machine I had never used (insert panic here).

It was a long evening. Several busted needles, many jams, and many tears later, I was able to get the patch sewn on the uniform. From the time frame of about 9 p.m. that evening until 1:30 am the next morning is the amount of time it took. It was not pretty and any experienced seamstress would have been mortified to see the underside of the garment, but I did it!

The beginning of a new hobby

I never wanted to be in that position again. I told myself I was going to learn how to sew, no matter how difficult of a challenge it may be and that was the day my sewing journey began..
